Let's define HOT Linking :
If you create a link within your web site in order to directly display another website's content (such as graphics, sounds, etc.) , that's hot linking. Note that hot linking is not the simple placing of a URL link on your webpages. Rather, hot linking adds content to your pages at the expense of someone else's web server bandwidth. This can be accomplished by uploading a picture to Blogger VIA the web.
There's also the consideration of "fair use," which allows portions of copyrighted material to be reproduced without the copyright holder's permission. Example : A picture leading to an article, or reading an E-book printing a paragraph, instead of the entire E-book.
* Where is the fine line here ? * Did we see digg this article is prohibited ? * Does that give a server the right to switch pic's to obscene ones ?
There are scripts to prevent "Hot linking". It seem's that the OS9USER News Room, has ran into one of these.
Basically your referring URL (from your explorer) is stored in a cookie, which triggers the script to do whatever. In this case, change the IMG Path to another location. Our IMG=5thiryone.com/... activated a script on that site, that adjusted your screen accordingly. This problem was caught, and luckly did not get out in our feeds what-so-ever. Our picture image was transformed into something obscene, when I hotlinked to a pic when I dugg his story.
(so what I had was a Dugg story w/picture) Big deal ?
I will personally guarantee, there will be no more "Hot linking" here. We never heard of the terminology until today talking with Google. We have been online here over a year, and almost 2 years on my website, and never had a problem like this before ever, nor ever again.
What can you do ????
Well, we do not use cookies on all 5 websites we run.
So do not except cookies from our site(s). They are a hackers dream anyways. Next, keep an eye on our news, we will keep you up to date on where the goodies and problems are. Run your explorer in a Sandbox like we do, eliminating alot of headache's.
Lastly get our feeds and stay up to date on what is going on in the Internet World !
Any site that transform's your pictures into something else is NOT worth the visit, never mind digging ( a hole )

Users can download all our goodies, via our toolbar. Click On "Your Menu / Downloads " and select the program you want... there is much more available, but this is a quick reference we use. There seems to be a debate online on stealing bandwidth. So if I post a banner from your site, lets say , I am stealing bandwidth because I have to goto your server to get the pic you have chosen ! - Digging a story , and putting a picture with it, IS NOT STEALING, I FEEL IT IS PUBLICIZING YOUR ARTICLE, NOT STEALING BANDWIDTH. There is a debate going on, on exactly the ethic's of online reporting ... Seem's I caused it. I was also asked if I was the cause of blogger being down today, because of my attack here !! Man , what a day !
Cookies are hackers dream?!? Scripts preventing hot linking are malicious?!? Nope.
You are confusing copyright laws with bandwith stealing/hotlinking.
by the way: it's accept, as in "i accept your apologies" -or- except: as in "we will make an exception and won't laugh at you."
Cookies are a wireless hackers dream. Where have you been ? Cookies can easily be "intercepted" by a wireless network, giving you access to ...
(sorry should have been more specific)
ethical conduct is more important, than any "Unsaid Law's" on the internet. You remember that !
"Cookies can easily be "intercepted" by a wireless network"
What are you talking about? I would worry more about the "wireless hacker" intercepting the entire stream of data, not the cookie. And if they are at the point where they can do that, then you're really to blame for not running with encryption or VPN.
Wow.
