Teddy bear teacher found guilty

Thursday, November 29, 2007

A British teacher was found guilty Thursday of inciting religious hatred for allowing her class of 7-year-olds to name a teddy bear Muhammad.

Gillian Gibbons, 54, could have been sentenced to 40 lashes or six months in jail. But the Sudanese court instead ordered her to serve 15 days behind bars.

“The judge found Gillian Gibbons guilty and sentenced her to 15 days jail and deportation,” said Ali Mohammed Hajab, a member of her defense team.

Gibbons, from Liverpool in northern England, was arrested after some parents complained that she had allowed her class of 7-year-olds at the Unity School to name a teddy bear Muhammad. It is the most popular boy's name in predominantly Muslim Sudan, but some believe using the prophet's name for an inanimate object is idolatry.

School officials have said Gibbons would never intentionally insult Islam and that the children themselves chose the stuffed toy's name. One little boy said he suggested the name Muhammad because he wanted the bear to be called after himself.

The school has closed until January for fear of reprisals. And riot police surrounded the Khartoum courthouse as Gibbons, wearing a dark blue jacket and blue dress, was brought to trial Thursday morning.

The proceedings were closed to the public and the press.

The case has raised tensions between Sudan and Britain, the African nation's colonial ruler.

Before the verdict was reached, British Foreign Secretary David Miliband said he had told the Sudanese ambassador he was "very concerned" about Gibbons.

"We believe this was an innocent misunderstanding," Miliband said.
