Green substance in lobster may be Toxic

Monday, July 28, 2008

The government is warning that the soft, green substance in the crustacean's body cavity could be toxic (Liver).

The Food and Drug Administration says it's still OK to eat the white meat in the claws and tails, but the substance known as tomalley should be avoided.

Symptoms of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning include tingling, burning, numbness, drowsiness, incoherent speech, and respiratory paralysis. Symptoms typically occur within two hours of consumption, and can last a few days in non-lethal cases. Severe cases can result in death by respiratory arrest within 24 hours of consumption, but with prompt medical attention, survivors typically make a full recovery.

Anyone who has eaten shellfish or lobster tomalley and experiences these symptoms should seek immediate medical care.

Reports of illness should be reported to the local board of health or the DPH Food Protection Program at 617-983-6773.

It's still Okay to eat the white lobster meat found in the claws and tails of the undersea delicacy, but the green stuff that most diners already avoid should definitely be discarded this year, said the Food and Drug Administration.

Known also as tomalley, the substance acts as the liver and pancreas of the lobster.

A red tide or algae bloom ranging from Northern New England to Canada this year has contaminated fishing grounds with high levels of toxins that cause paralytic shellfish poisoning.

Red tide is a naturally occurring marine algae that carries a potent neurotoxin; some ocean fish and shellfish such as clams, oysters and mussels accumulate the red tide toxin, making them dangerous for people to eat. Lobsters accumulate the red tide toxin in their tomalley (which acts like a liver/pancreas) from their various food sources. The toxin does not transfer into the meat of the lobster.

The tomalley consumption advisory was prompted by the results from testing conducted on lobsters collected yesterday from the Isles of Shoals. The state of Maine reported elevated levels of red tide toxin in tomalley from some locations earlier this week and issued a tomalley consumption advisory Friday. Canada has also issued similar advisories.

The warning applies to American lobster, also known as Maine lobster, which is harvested in Atlantic waters from Canada to South Carolina.

Cooking does not eliminate the toxins, but studies have shown that even when high levels are present in the tomalley, lobster meat is usually not affected, the FDA said.
