Windows 7 Rewrite - The Same Old VISTA

Friday, January 9, 2009

Who is Microsoft trying to fool? Underneath the fresh coat of paint, Windows 7 looks and runs like Vista. PcWorld has the benchmarks to prove it.

After reading that great article , I really began to wonder is Windows 7 a Vista rewrite ?

Well common sense tells you that Microsoft did not spend millions in R&D (Research & Development) to throw it in the bit bucket on the floor. But common sense is not proof.

I need facts. Here is what I have found out ...

Window 7 Damages MP3

The problem was first recognized by users who noticed that the first few seconds of their mp3 files had been cut off. Some thought it was related to bad crossfading first but it soon turned out that the data was not there anymore. Many users thought it was caused by Windows Media Player 12 but it turned out to be a global problem.

It does however only happen under the following circumstances: The first few seconds of a mp3 file will be cut in Windows 7 if the header of the mp3 file is larger than 16 Kilobytes and if meta data is written to the file. Some media players are able to automatically add missing meta data which is the most likely cause.

Windows for Warships

Many in the software community have criticized the Navy's moves, feeling that Microsoft Windows cannot offer the sort of guaranteed reliability one might wish to see in computers which will sometimes have direct control of powerful weapon systems - and on which Blighty's fighting matelots may one day depend for their lives.

This was very scary to read. I would not depend on Windows to drive a toothpick down the road, never mind run weapon systems on Naval Vessels.

Even LifeHacker reports :
While it's true that Windows 7 isn't much different from Windows Vista (inside and out) ...

Torrents have more hacks & cracks already before Microsoft’s server meltdown from downloading !

The most convincing proof was PcWorld. They found Memory, Processing Threads and many other "program signatures" to be almost identical. Microsoft confirmed that it "stripped down" Vista to the bare core, however it seems like they put most of it back inside.

Microsoft is under pressure to get this operating system out. Computer makers are not going to wait to much longer for the next operating system to put inside their brand new shiny machine.

In addition, Windows 7 (as all new operating systems) take more memory than the previous versions. The space requirements to install are even more than XP (not to even mention Vista).

Vanishing Hard Drives, Wireless problems, Drivers & many other problems were reported, however I can not confirm them all.

I hate Microsoft. However, if you like them, then I suggest a "
Simple Approach" to this problem.

Wait and See.

I suggested this when Vista came out, and that was a total flop. This looks much like a Vista rewrite with a few tweaks added in.

If you "Wait and See" like I suggested (before running out and burning your money) the market will clearly tell you if the product is any good or not. Hell, they can even keep their own servers running, how are they going to help you ?

Now there is a thinker ....
