Google’s top executive shrugged off any privacy concerns in the wake of reports that his company secretly recorded data from private Wi-Fi wireless networks, saying "No one has taken it, done anything with it. It has not been given to anyone."

The admission came in a blog post from Alan Eustace, Google’s senior vice president of engineering and research, who wrote that the data protection authority in Hamburg, Germany had asked that it be allowed to audit the Wi-Fi data collected by Street View, which prompted Google to re-examine everything it had been collected.

A lie or Omission

Eustace admitted that an April 27 blog that said no personal information was collected was incorrect.

Schmidt goes on record saying " If you have something that you don't want anyone to know, maybe you shouldn't be doing it in the first place, but if you really need that kind of privacy, the reality is that search engines — including Google — do retain this information for some time.

Ignorance is no protection from punishment if one has committed a serious breach of the data privacy laws. Google clearly needs to re-examine is privacy policies.

After reading over 140 websites, Eric uses words like "probably" which to me means he is really not sure, or does not want to commit to any comment so far. His idea is simply, if you do not want Google to find you, do not post information about yourself.

It is also clear he really does not care about privacy, unless it was his. It was interesting to learn that CNET was banned from Google because they did talk about Eric in a few postings.

Eric is a member of President Obama's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. Eric is also connected to 141 board members in 5 different organizations across 8 different industries.

Maybe Schmidt is playing politics. Google has some major issues pending in Washington including wi-fi privacy.

Should he enter politics, Schmidt will have to quit Google because it will be tough to live up to the company's do no evil credo in Washington, where evil seems to have its own lobbyist.

One thing is very clear, Google will NOT delete any data collected unless it gets a court order stating to do so.
