Firing Squad Executes Convicted Killer (Video)

Death row inmate Ronnie Lee Gardner died in a barrage of bullets 2 a.m. (ET) Friday as Utah carried out its first firing squad execution in 14 years.
He would be only the third person to die by firing squad in the United States in 33 years.
Corrections officials announced Gardner had consumed his last meal Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m., and has elected to fast prior to the anticipated execution. His dinner included steak, lobster, 7-Up, apple pie and vanilla ice cream.
Utah adopted lethal injection as the default execution method in 2004, but Gardner was one still allowed to choose the controversial firing squad option because he was sentenced before the law changed. He told his lawyer he did it because he preferred it -- not because he wanted the controversy surrounding the execution to draw attention to his case or embarrass the state.
